Oil Painting Classes by Kathie Wheeler now at SG1311!

Introduction to Oil Painting

Learn the basics of painting with the wonderful medium of oil paints with artist Kathie Wheeler. In this four session workshop you will learn about the use and care of oil paints and the tools used to make an oil painting, as well as how to construct a painting. The supplies are included in the cost for this class, so students can experience the medium before investing in the supplies themselves. Students will work from still life sett-ups as well as from their own photos. Be ready to explore the joys of oil painting!

February 1, 8 15, 22 from 9:00 till noon at Studio/Gallery 131. Cost for class is $150 and includes all materials.

Upcoming Meeting For Artists in La Crosse

If you are involved in the arts within the La Crosse community:

There is a Public Meeting on Monday October 19 at the Pump House, 6 to 7:30 to gain input from the arts community. In a facilitated conversation, sponsored by the City Arts Board, we hope to explore how artists view the vitality of the arts community. Do artists feel supported in their creative endeavors? Can we collectively achieve a more equitable and vibrant community?

2015 Plein Air Between The Bluffs Opening Reception/Sale, Sat 26th, 5-9pm!

It's hard to believe it is that time again!   This will be the third year for the event and I'm happy to report that it keeps getting better and better.   We are really looking forward to seeing everyone at the reception on Saturday.   It's going to be a great time!   There is some exceptional work in this year's show, the collectors out there will not be disappointed.  I am impressed by the wide range of subject matter and styles.  Subject matter painted includes numerous iconic La Crosse area locations and landmarks with a few surprises thrown in.

Make sure to get there early if you are looking to add a great piece of a art to your collection!

The doors open at 5pm.    Awards presented at 6pm.   Light refreshments will be available.  Please plan to join us and show your support for the visual arts.

'Of People & Places: Watercolors by Bob Witte, Showing at SG1311

We are pleased to announce our next show featuring local watercolor artist Bob Witte. Bob is an award winning artist whose work truly demonstrates the versatility and beauty of the watercolor medium.  Of People and Places, showcases several of his recent works including a number of alluring portraits and painterly landscapes.  This is a show you will truly enjoy seeing!
You are invited to join us for the opening reception this coming Saturday, September 5th, from 6 to 9 pm.  Bob will be present to meet with guests and discuss his work.

Light refreshments will be available and as usual it will be a fun crowd!
Reminder: The 2015 Plein Air Between The Bluffs Show and Sale will open at the gallery on Saturday, September 26th, from 5 to 9 pm. A number of local and regional artists will be participating and we anticipate an even better show than last year!  Mark your calendar and plan to attend.

Announcing New Classes at SG1311: Watercolor Classes with Bob Witte!

Beginning Watercolor Classes: The New Golf  
What: 5-week, 10-session class in watercolor painting for the rank beginner to the early intermediate painter.

Who: Classes are structured for young adults (15 and older) and older. 

Where: Studio Gallery 1311, located at 1311 Market Street, La crosse, Wi

When: July 27-August 30, 2015.  Classes will be held Mondays and Thursdays from 0900 hours until 1200 hours.

Instructor: Bob Witte is an award- winning watercolor painter who lives in La Crosse. he is largely self-taught but has studied with such notable watercolor masters as Charles Reid, Frank Eber, and Ted Nuttall. His philosophy is that anyone can become a decent painter by training to see rather than look, proper instruction and dedicated work. These classes will serve to start one down this rewarding pathway.

Curriculum: Basics such as materials and supplies, setting up one’s palette, learning proper brush handling and various brush strokes will be covered. A good foundation in seeing and drawing will be practiced and then translated into simple painting of objects. The important topics of local color, values, wet on dry, wet in wet, various washes, edge control, and glazing techniques will be covered. Several small projects utilizing still life, landscape, figure painting and simple portrait will be used to both illustrate the use of techniques but also leave the student with a framable painting. The last week will be devoted to a project entirely of the student’s choosing.
